ALWAYS HEADFIRST NEVER MINDLESS

Courage starts the moment we take the leap.
When we go beyond our limits, we find our true strength.

Water demands trust – in yourself and in the moment. For Janis McDavid, that wasn’t always easy. As a child, he nearly drowned and faced difficult experiences in school swimming lessons – fears that kept him away from the water for years.

In April 2024, everything changed. What once was fear turned into passion. Today, Janis stands for courage, mental strength, and the willingness to dive into new challenges again and again.

As featured on stern TV: Janis McDavid, the record-breaking para swimmer who turned fear into strength.

"Fish don’t have arms and legs either."

Classification in para swimming

In para swimming, competitions – as in regular swimming – are divided by gender and age groups.

Additionally, classification ensures that athletes with different types of disabilities can compete fairly.

The classes range from S1 to S10 for physical, S11 to S13 for visual, and S14 for intellectual disabilities.

The lower the number, the higher the limitation.

In the end, true performance is defined by training, technique, and mental strength.

Points table in para swimming

To make results from different classes comparable, a points system is used.

Each swimmer’s time is compared to the world record of their own classification.

The closer the time is to the record, the more points are awarded. The scale usually goes up to 1000 points, which represents a world record performance.

Qualification for many competitions is based on a minimum score.

This makes performance comparable – regardless of individual conditions.

Championship titles and records – what’s the difference?

In para swimming, it’s not only the time that counts but also the points.

A record always refers to a specific classification – the best time ever achieved within that class.

A championship title, however, is usually awarded across classes, based on the points table.

Thus, a swimmer who finishes later may still score more points and win the title.

What matters is who performs strongest within their own classification.
